Client Highlight: Crestmark Millworks

Crestmark Millworks is an Arcata-based full-service cabinetry and millwork provider. Founded in 1997 by two brothers and their father, the company faced the harsh realities of entrepreneurship head-on, especially after their father's passing. 


With no significant capital but a lot of determination, owners Scott and Sean Olsen felt unprepared for the common cash flow challenges the construction industry is known for. "We didn't really have a clue what we were doing," Scott shared, reflecting on the early days. 


But the turning point for Crestmark Millworks came when they sought the support of the North Edge. "North Edge was able to come through for us when a conventional bank would not. They took a chance on us," Sean explained, emphasizing the important role North Edge played in their early years and continued success. This partnership wasn't a one-time deal; over the years, Crestmark Millworks has secured multiple loans from North Edge to mitigate cash flow issues, allowing them to scale operations.


Now, 26 years since its beginning, Crestmark Millworks has a team of over 50 employees and projects with revenue exceeding $10 million. The company has evolved into a significant player in the industry. Notable projects include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the prestigious Portland Art Museum. The Prism Apartments in San Francisco won them the Ralph B. McClure Craftsmanship Award for its complex engineering and style. Their expertise is also demonstrated in local casinos like Blue Lake, Bear River, and Redwood Hotel Casino. 


"Often when local businesses consider selling outside the area, they think they need a different skill set—that it is a different world," observed Sean. "We found that it is really not so different after all." Olsen says that the brothers used the same networking principles that many businesses use locally to establish themselves in other markets.


"You still need to use your contacts-meet people and shake hands. Maybe the networking events are a little bigger than an Arcata Chamber mixer but the same networking ideas still apply. You just need to get in," Olsen said. And Crestmark did. Crestmark Millworks' expansion into new markets is an example of both their ingenuity and excellence. It demonstrates what people are capable of when they're not afraid to take risks and follow their passion.  


When Crestmark Millworks met North Edge, they were a small but determined startup learning the basics of business. Now a recognized leader in their industry, Crestmark Millworks is a shining example of what happens when determination and skill meet community support.
